Tips to Easily Choose Good Secure PINs and Passwords

This is a great article I read today that may help some of you with choosing good secure passwords that are (really!) easy to remember.

Back in June, a client of mine had the "dictionary" form of attack on his email password. The sp@mmer sent out 100,000 emails using the client's email address and mail server and got his site shut down by the hosting company until we could get it straightened out.

That prompted a newsletter from me with some suggestions for password security, and this article is another tool in the arsenal to keep the lazy scammers from taking advantage of us.

Phishing Quiz - How Good Are You At Spotting A Scam?

I had talked to a client this week about phishing scams in their inbox, and meant to do a post to remind everyone to NEVER, EVER click on a link in an email when asking for you to login to verify account details, update your account info or because your account has been restricted or suspended.

Always leave the email, open up your browser, go to the company's website and login if you have any concerns. Think I'm being paranoid?

Consider this, why would scammers go to all the trouble to mock-up fake emails/website if it wasn't lucrative to them? These people are lazy, no good scum who want to make money without working.

Here's a place to test your phishing detection skills. Don't worry that you are familiar with the sites, if you're good, you'll spot the fakes!

Keywords are Key

This article "10 Steps To Top 10 Rankings In Google" places a good deal of emphasis on researching and using keywords and keyphrases properly for good Google rankings.

It says that using keywords that are too competitive will not do your site justice. Keep in mind:
Well established sites and businesses with very deep pockets have the resources to completely dominate those keywords.
That doesn't mean don't use competitive keywords, but you must also research and use 'long-tail' keywords. For example, instead of concentrating on the keywords "office furniture" try targeting "home office furniture" or "[brand-name] office furniture".

You'll have less competition for these phrases and will deliver more targeted traffic to your site. The biggest mistake I see clients make is to assume once they are online, that the entire world is their market. Your market is still your market, no matter if you're brick and mortar or online. There are segments of the population that will never buy from you because they simply don't need or want your product or service.

Trying to be all things to all consumers is the biggest waste of time for an online business.

iPhone Developers Start Here

Yes, I'd love to have an iPhone. Not simply because it's the newest gadget out, but because I think it would crazy handy to have and use. But this article is about developing for it.

A client asked me this spring if I thought mobile browsing would take off and be worth any effort to program/design for it. I gave them a big fat "YES!" If you have any doubts, look at where MP3 technology has taken us so far.

With that in mind, I read a news story this morning about Apple's offering up a web developer's web site. Of course they want us to develop for their machine: if there's nothing to see on the mobile browser, why would anyone need it?

The first step is to download and install Safari for Windows. Safari is the browser employed by the iPhone. Did that and here's my initial thoughts on Safari:

VERY, very fast loading of web pages. This I can grow to love. I'm not kidding here, even quick loading pages in Firefox LOAD FASTER IN SAFARI. I didn't check the difference in IE. I don't care.

Ad blockers are turned on and actually work right out of the box. This control is easy to switch off, just as are all the other options.

Minimalist interface. I'm not sure if I like this yet or not. I'm probably just used to all the on-screen info I get with Firefox.

The best news, at least IMHO as a web developer, is that all my sites work in Safari just as in IE and Firefox. Just shows the awesome power and flexibility of CSS and XHTML and PHP.

When I get time, I'm next going back to the developers web site and see what I can come up with for a site of mine. I believe there would be a great advantage to getting Article-DirectorySite.com mobile ready.

A Philosophical Look At Conducing Business (Or, How We Got Downriver in One Piece)

We had a great time for the 4th of July yesterday, as I hope you all did. I took the whole day off and went kayaking with my husband. As I return to "business mode" again today, my heart is still enjoying the adventure we had yesterday and I think I can turn it into an analogy on conducting a successful business in the "wild river of commerce".

Before setting out, we did some research, some of which was conducted a month ago. We knew where we wanted to begin our trip and where we wanted to stop. We then drove that stretch of river we were interested in and did some scouting so we'd have some idea of what we were getting ourselves into. Yesterday many things were just perfect: the weather, the river level and flow, and the amount of time we had available, so the decision was made to go ahead. If even one of those things weren't just right, we would have postponed our trip until we had those things in order.

How similar is that to being successful in business? You must research your market to be sure that all things are in place before setting out. In business, as on the river, it could be an unenjoyable ride at best, and disastrous at worst if you don't perform your "due diligence".

Once the decision was made to go for it, we began to prepare. While we know we can't plan for every eventuality, we are familiar enough with the experience to know the bare minimum that will be needed for success.

While I do like spontaneity in my personal life, I'm more comfortable with planning and preparation in my business. Again, not all things can be anticipated, but if you've prepared for the things you can prepare for, you'll be in a much better position for addressing the unexpected when it crops up-and it will crop up, you can plan on that!

Once we were in the water, it was a matter of making quick decisions with the information we had at the moment. We could usually see a good stretch of water ahead of us, but we never knew exactly what was coming after that. We had to stay flexible and ready to change direction at a moment's notice as the next stretch of river came into view. Did we always make the right choice? No, but we made adjustments as we went along and that's what got us downriver in one piece. A few minor mistakes in judgment didn't ruin the whole trip, and actually added to the excitement. We quickly learned from those errors and made better decisions down the river because of our experience.

In business, and especially in the ever-changing waters of Internet business and marketing, we must remain flexible and make constant adjustments to our plans to stay afloat. If we think we'll shape the market to our rigid idea of what will work and how, we'll surely fail. We must always be ready to adjust and change with the market flow and the obstacles in our way.

There were many, many obstacles in the river to pick our way around and through. Fortunately, my husband and I travel well together, whether by land, air or water. We're pretty good at spotting obstacles, deciding quickly how to handle them, following through on those decisions and making adjustments to the rest of trip based on the outcome.

Don't successful businesses do the same? Find good partners to trust, recognizing something that could impede our progress or achievement for what it is, drawing conclusions based on past experience and present information, following through on our course of choice and adjusting accordingly.

We made one choice yesterday that put us very close to going for a swim, but we righted ourselves and went on our way. No time to pull over and calm our quaking nerves, or conduct a lengthy analysis of whose fault it was. We just continued to "go with the flow" and didn't make the same mistake again.

All told, our trip was thrilling, relaxing and just a lot of fun! It took us out of who we are in our daily lives and we accomplished something we can be proud to have done.

This morning I have a refreshed version of my business philosophy - there are obstacles around every bend that challenge us to overcome and learn from - and there are some smooth stretches allowing us to relax, look around and take pleasure in where we are and how we got there.
